PIER “Partnership for Innovation, Education and Research”

Universität Hamburg and Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron (DESY) are closely linked by decades of successful collaboration.  In 2011, the two institutions further strengthened their long-standing cooperation by establishing their strategic “Partnership for Innovation, Education and Research” (PIER). Under the roof of PIER, Universität Hamburg and DESY combine their expertise and thereby create various synergies for the benefit of research in Hamburg.

In order to grow, innovative research ideas need a collaborative working environment that reaches beyond institutional or disciplinary boundaries. PIER promotes joint innovation initiatives, top-level education, and research collaboration in the name of Universität Hamburg and DESY.

PIER focuses on four research fields: Particle and Astroparticle Physics, Nanosciences, Photon Science, and Infection and Structural Biology. Two additional interdisciplinary competence fields are Theoretical Physics and Accelerator Research.

Acting as a coordination platform between Universität Hamburg and DESY, PIER fosters research collaboration and innovation initiatives of researchers from both institutions through different activities, e.g. seed funding, special workshop formats, and fellowships. Universität Hamburg’s and DESY’s joint graduate education program is coordinated by the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School.

Limitless research on the banks of the River Elbe: The PIER Helmholtz Graduate School

Since January 2013, doctoral candidates attending Hamburg’s PIER Helmholtz Graduate School have been benefiting from the outstanding research environment and the unique research infrastructures offered by DESY and Universität Hamburg. The graduate school enables doctoral candidates to make optimal use of the two partners’ strengths.

The graduate school is jointly funded by DESY, the Universität Hamburg and the Helmholtz Association.

International and interdisciplinary

The PIER Helmholtz Graduate School ensures that doctoral candidates receive an internationally recognized and optimally supervised education in their respective fields. In doing so, the graduate school promotes research and networking within an interdisciplinary framework. Various interdisciplinary events in the PIER research fields provide participants with the basis for lively scientific discourse. The spectrum of events ranges from cross-curricular postgraduate seminars that the participants organize themselves to the interdisciplinary PIER Graduate Week. The graduate school offers the doctoral candidates a wide range of internationally focused support activities and attractive services. These offers include financing possibilities for conducting research abroad and discussions in small groups with renowned scientists from all over the world. Thanks to their roster of scientists from more than 40 countries, DESY and the UHH are extremely international, and discussions are held in English as a matter of course.

Service-oriented and strongly supportive

Because good living conditions are also essential for obtaining a Ph.D., a wide range of services and support measures is offered to the doctoral candidates at the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School. The offers range from a buddy program organized by and for doctoral candidates to assistance with obtaining a residence permit and finding accommodation. Other services include special language courses and organized leisure activities that enable students to jointly discover the beautiful and lively port city of Hamburg.

Focused on key skills and careers

The studies program focuses on teaching students key skills that will prepare them for their subsequent careers in science, research, industry and business. Please have a look at the website of the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School for further information on other funding opportunities.
